PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)
Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats 15 ml – prescription pain relief for cats
Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats is a liquid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) containing meloxicam. It is used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in cats, most commonly for short-term use after surgery or during episodes of musculoskeletal pain, and sometimes for carefully monitored longer-term use where your vet considers it appropriate.
Pain and inflammation are common problems in cats, particularly as they get older or if they have been injured. Because cats often hide their discomfort, an effective pain-relief plan is important to maintain their comfort, mobility and quality of life. Meloxidyl helps by reducing the production of certain prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation so your cat can move more easily and rest more comfortably.
What Meloxidyl for cats is used for
Your vet may prescribe Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats to:
-
Relieve post-operative pain and inflammation in cats after surgery
-
Manage pain and inflammation associated with acute musculoskeletal disorders
-
Support longer-term management of some chronic painful conditions, if your vet believes the benefits outweigh the risks and appropriate monitoring is in place
The exact indication, dose and duration will depend on your cat’s diagnosis, age, weight and overall health. Your vet will explain why Meloxidyl has been chosen and how long they expect treatment to continue.
Strength and bottle size
This formulation contains meloxicam at 0.5 mg per ml and is specifically designed for cats and very small patients, where the dose needs to be measured very precisely. The 15 ml bottle is supplied with a small, graduated dosing syringe so you can measure the correct volume for your cat’s bodyweight.
How Meloxidyl works
Meloxidyl contains meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug. NSAIDs work by inhibiting enzymes (cyclo-oxygenase, or COX) involved in producing prostaglandins that promote pain, inflammation and fever. By reducing these prostaglandins, Meloxidyl can:
-
Decrease inflammation in affected tissues
-
Ease pain, making your cat more comfortable
-
Improve ease of movement and general wellbeing
When used appropriately, many owners notice that their cat is more willing to jump, move around, groom and interact once pain is better controlled.
How Meloxidyl Oral Suspension for Cats is given
Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml is given by mouth using the small syringe provided. The dose is based on your cat’s bodyweight and the condition being treated. Your vet will calculate the correct starting dose and, if needed, any follow-up doses.
General guidance (always follow your own vet’s instructions and the package leaflet):
-
Shake the bottle if the label tells you to do so before dosing
-
Attach the syringe to the bottle opening as shown in the leaflet (if designed to do so)
-
Draw up exactly the volume prescribed using the weight markings on the syringe
-
The dose can usually be given onto a small amount of food or directly into the mouth – use whichever method your vet recommends for your cat
-
Give doses at the times advised by your vet (for example once daily for a set number of days)
-
Never exceed the prescribed dose or duration
If you miss a dose or are unsure whether your cat has swallowed all of the medicine, contact your vet for advice before giving more. Do not double dose.
Monitoring and check-ups
Cats can be more sensitive to NSAIDs than dogs, so careful dosing and monitoring are very important. If Meloxidyl is used for more than a very short course, your vet will usually recommend:
-
Regular clinical check-ups to assess comfort, mobility and general health
-
Periodic blood tests to monitor kidney and liver function, especially in older cats or those with pre-existing conditions
You should keep a close eye on your cat while they are on Meloxidyl and contact your vet promptly if you notice any changes that worry you.
Safety, contraindications and precautions
Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats is not suitable for every cat. It must not be used in:
-
Cats with known hypersensitivity to meloxicam or any other ingredient in the product
-
Cats with existing stomach or intestinal ulcers or bleeding
-
Cats with severe liver, kidney or heart disorders
-
Dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive cats unless these problems have been corrected first
-
Pregnant or lactating queens, unless your vet specifically judges that the benefits outweigh the risks
Meloxidyl should not generally be used at the same time as other NSAIDs or corticosteroids because combining these can increase the risk of side effects. Always tell your vet about every other medicine, supplement or over-the-counter product your cat is receiving.
Possible side effects
As with all NSAIDs, some cats may experience side effects while taking Meloxidyl. The most common are related to the digestive tract and may include:
-
Vomiting
-
Diarrhoea or soft stools
-
Reduced appetite
These effects are sometimes mild and may resolve when treatment is stopped, but they can occasionally become serious. Stop the medicine and contact your vet immediately if you notice:
-
Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea
-
Black, tarry or bloody stools
-
Marked loss of appetite or sudden weight loss
-
Lethargy, weakness or a change in drinking and urination
-
Any sign of abdominal pain or that your cat seems generally unwell
Your vet may run blood tests, adjust the dose or change to a different treatment if needed.
Use in people and handling advice
Meloxidyl is a veterinary medicine for animals only. To minimise any risk to people:
-
Keep the bottle and syringe out of sight and reach of children
-
Wash your hands after dosing your cat
-
Avoid contact with the liquid if you know you are sensitive to NSAIDs or meloxicam
If anyone accidentally swallows the product, medical advice should be sought immediately and the doctor should be shown the product label or package leaflet.
Frequently asked questions about Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml for cats
Is Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats a prescription-only medicine?
Yes. Meloxidyl is classed as a POM-V medicine. Your cat must be examined by a vet and you must have a valid prescription before it can be supplied.
Can I use my dog’s Meloxidyl in my cat?
No. You must never use a dog formulation or dose in a cat unless your vet has specifically prescribed it and calculated the dose. The strengths and dosing schedules differ, and cats are more sensitive to NSAIDs, so only use Meloxidyl exactly as prescribed for your individual cat.
How quickly will my cat feel better on Meloxidyl?
Many cats show signs of improved comfort within a few days of starting Meloxidyl. After surgery, your vet will usually plan the dosing so that pain relief is in place during the immediate recovery period.
How long will my cat need Meloxidyl?
For post-operative pain or acute problems, Meloxidyl might only be needed for a short, fixed course. In some carefully selected cases, your vet may recommend longer-term treatment, but this always requires close monitoring and regular reviews.
Can Meloxidyl be given with other medicines?
Meloxidyl may be used alongside some other treatments (such as certain antibiotics or joint supplements), but it should not generally be combined with another NSAID or a steroid. Always give your vet a full list of everything your cat is taking so they can check for interactions.
What should I do if I accidentally give too much?
Contact your vet immediately if you think your cat has received more than the prescribed dose. Do not wait for signs of illness to appear.
Always follow the instructions on your cat’s prescription, the product label and the package leaflet. If you have any concerns about Meloxidyl 0.5 mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats, dosing or possible side effects, speak to your vet for personalised advice.
