Meloxidyl Oral Liquid for Dogs and Cats
PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)
Meloxidyl Oral Liquid for Dogs and Cats 5 mg/ml 10 ml – prescription pain relief and anti-inflammatory
Meloxidyl Oral Liquid for Dogs and Cats 5 mg/ml is a liquid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (NSAID) containing meloxicam. It is used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation in dogs and cats, and is most often prescribed for conditions such as osteoarthritis or for short-term pain relief after surgery. Because it is an NSAID, Meloxidyl works by inhibiting prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation, helping your pet move more comfortably and feel more like themselves again.
This product is supplied as a 5 mg/ml oral suspension in a 10 ml bottle, usually with a dosing syringe marked by weight so that the correct dose can be measured accurately. Meloxidyl is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V), so you will need a valid veterinary prescription before it can be dispensed. It must only be used under the direction of your vet.
What Meloxidyl is used for
Your vet may prescribe Meloxidyl Oral Liquid for:
-
Dogs with chronic osteoarthritis or other musculoskeletal pain
-
Dogs with acute musculoskeletal injury or inflammation
-
Cats requiring short-term relief of pain and inflammation, for example after surgery or for acute musculoskeletal conditions, where licensed and appropriate
The exact indication and dosing schedule will depend on your pet, and your vet will explain why it is being used and for how long treatment is expected to continue.
How Meloxidyl works
Meloxidyl contains meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). NSAIDs reduce the production of certain prostaglandins that are involved in pain and inflammation. By lowering levels of these substances, Meloxidyl can:
-
Help reduce swelling and inflammation in affected joints or tissues
-
Decrease pain, so dogs and cats may move more freely and rest more comfortably
-
Improve mobility and quality of life, particularly in dogs with osteoarthritis when used long term under veterinary supervision
Many owners notice that their dog or cat seems brighter, more willing to walk or jump, and more settled at rest once the medicine is working.
How Meloxidyl Oral Liquid is given
Meloxidyl Oral Liquid is given by mouth and is usually administered once daily after a loading dose, using the syringe or measuring device supplied. The dose is based on your pet’s bodyweight and the condition being treated. Your vet will calculate the correct dose and show you how to measure it.
General guidance (always follow your own vet’s instructions):
-
Shake the bottle before use if advised on the label or leaflet
-
Use only the syringe or dropper provided with the product
-
The dose can often be given mixed with food or placed carefully in the mouth, depending on your vet’s advice and your pet’s preference
-
Give doses at roughly the same time each day for ongoing treatment
-
Never exceed the prescribed dose or frequency
If you miss a dose or are unsure whether your pet has swallowed the full amount, contact your vet for advice. Do not double dose to make up for a missed dose.
Monitoring and check-ups
If Meloxidyl is used for more than a short course, your vet will usually recommend regular check-ups. NSAIDs are extremely helpful medicines, but they can affect the stomach, gut and kidneys in some animals, especially if used incorrectly or in patients with existing risk factors.
Your vet may:
-
Check your pet’s general health and mobility regularly
-
Perform blood tests before starting long-term treatment and at intervals during therapy, especially to monitor kidney and liver function
-
Adjust the dose or stop treatment if any concerns arise
If at any time your pet seems unwell while on Meloxidyl, contact your vet promptly.
Safety, contraindications and precautions
Meloxidyl Oral Liquid for Dogs and Cats is not suitable for every animal. It must not be used in:
-
Animals with known hypersensitivity to meloxicam or any of the excipients
-
Pregnant or lactating animals unless your vet specifically decides the benefits outweigh the risks
-
Animals with existing gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding
-
Animals with serious liver, kidney or heart disorders where NSAIDs could worsen their condition
-
Very young animals below the minimum age and weight specified in the product literature for that species
It must not be used together with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids unless your vet has specifically advised and is monitoring this, as combining such medicines increases the risk of side effects.
Possible side effects
As with all NSAIDs, some dogs and cats may experience side effects while taking Meloxidyl. These may include:
-
Vomiting or diarrhoea
-
Reduced appetite
-
Lethargy
-
Signs of stomach or intestinal irritation
In rare cases, more serious reactions involving the kidneys, liver or gastrointestinal tract can occur. Stop the medicine and contact your vet immediately if you notice:
-
Repeated vomiting or diarrhoea
-
Black, tarry or bloody stools
-
Marked loss of appetite
-
Persistent lethargy or weakness
-
Increased drinking and urination, or any sudden change in behaviour or condition that worries you
Your vet may run blood tests, adjust the dose or change to an alternative medicine if needed.
Use in people and handling advice
Meloxidyl is for animals only. To reduce any risk to people:
-
Keep the bottle and syringe out of sight and reach of children
-
Wash hands after administering the medicine
-
Avoid self-injection or ingestion; if this occurs, seek medical advice and show the doctor the product label
If someone in the household is allergic to NSAIDs or meloxicam, they should avoid direct contact with the product.
Frequently asked questions about Meloxidyl Oral Liquid
Is Meloxidyl Oral Liquid for Dogs and Cats a prescription-only medicine?
Yes. Meloxidyl is a POM-V product. A vet must examine your pet and issue a prescription before it can be supplied.
How quickly will Meloxidyl start to work?
Some dogs and cats show improvement in comfort and mobility within a few days of starting treatment. In chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, it may take a little longer to see the full benefit.
How long will my pet need Meloxidyl?
For post-operative or acute pain, Meloxidyl may only be needed for a short course as directed by your vet. For chronic conditions such as osteoarthritis, longer-term or ongoing treatment may be required, with regular check-ups to ensure it remains appropriate and safe.
Can I give Meloxidyl with other medicines?
Meloxidyl may be used alongside some other medicines, but it must not generally be combined with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids unless your vet has specifically planned this. Always tell your vet about everything else your pet is taking, including supplements or over-the-counter products.
Can I use Meloxidyl made for dogs in my cat?
You must only use Meloxidyl in the animal and at the dose your vet has prescribed. Never swap between dog and cat products or alter doses without veterinary advice, as the dosing and safety margins can differ between species and formulations.
What should I do if I accidentally give too much?
Contact your vet immediately if you think your pet may have received more than the prescribed dose. Do not wait for signs of illness to appear.
Always follow the instructions on your pet’s prescription, the product label and the package leaflet. If you have any questions or concerns about Meloxidyl Oral Liquid, dosing or potential side effects, speak to your vet for personalised advice.
