Rycarfa Tablets for Dogs
PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)
What Rycarfa Is
Rycarfa Tablets for Dogs contain the active ingredient carprofen, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) licensed for dogs. These tablets are available in strengths of 20 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg to suit different body weights and clinical needs.
When Your Vet May Prescribe Rycarfa
Veterinary surgeons may recommend Rycarfa when your dog:
-
Has degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) and shows pain, stiffness or reduced mobility.
-
Needs pain relief and inflammation reduction following orthopaedic or soft tissue surgery as a follow-on treatment to injectable analgesics.
Used under veterinary supervision, Rycarfa supports improved comfort and movement in affected dogs.
How Rycarfa Works
Carprofen works by inhibiting certain enzymes (COX-1 and COX-2) involved in the inflammatory cascade. This reduction in inflammation leads to decreased pain and improved mobility.
Dosage & Administration
-
Store consultation with your vet is essential for correct dosing. Typical starting dose: 4 mg/kg bodyweight once daily or divided into two doses. After about 7 days, subject to response, the dose may be reduced to 2 mg/kg once daily.
-
Tablets can be divided (scored) for dose adjustment.
-
Long-term use should only continue under veterinary supervision with monitoring of clinical response.
Precautions & Contra-indications
-
Do not use in cats.
-
Do not use in pregnant or lactating bitches, dogs under 4 months old, or dogs with significant renal, hepatic or cardiac disease, or gastrointestinal ulceration or bleeding. Use caution in older dogs, or those that are dehydrated, hypovolaemic or hypotensive — risk of renal toxicity may increase.
-
Do not combine with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids without veterinary advice.
-
Possible adverse reactions: vomiting, diarrhoea, appetite loss, lethargy, liver or kidney changes — mainly within first week, sometimes serious.
Storage & Handling
Store in original packaging, below 25 °C, protected from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and other animals. If tablets are halved, the remaining portion must be used within 24 hours of opening the blister.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How soon will my dog improve?
Many dogs show reduction in pain and improved mobility within a week of consistent use. However, full benefit may take longer and depends on underlying condition.
Can I stop the tablet if my dog seems better?
Only under veterinary guidance. Osteoarthritis and chronic musculoskeletal disorders often require long-term management.
Is it safe for older dogs?
Yes, but older dogs may need more frequent clinical monitoring due to higher risk of side-effects (renal, hepatic, gastrointestinal).
Can I use it with other pain relief medications?
No combination of NSAIDs or corticosteroids should be used unless your vet explicitly advises.
Is a prescription required?
Yes. Rycarfa is a POM-V prescription-only veterinary medicine.
