Postage Restritions

From 1st January 2026, new regulations mean that certain veterinary medicines can no longer be posted to Mainland UK. These rules affect products that require strict temperature control, specialised handling, or fall under specific legal categories. Please refer to our FAQ section below for a full explanation of which items are affected and why these changes have been introduced.

FAQ – Supplying Orders to Mainland UK (England, Scotland & Wales)

1. Why can’t you send some veterinary medicines to mainland UK?

We are based in Northern Ireland, which follows slightly different rules for veterinary medicines compared with Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales).

Under current regulations, we are only allowed to send certain medicines from NI to GB if the product is specifically authorised for both regions.
If it isn’t, we legally have to treat it as Northern Ireland–only and cannot post it to GB, even if you have a valid prescription.

This is a legal requirement, not a shop policy.

This rule works BOTH ways:

Just as we cannot send certain NI-only medicines to England, vets and pharmacies in England cannot send certain GB-only medicines to Northern Ireland unless their packaging is authorised for NI as well.

If the pack is GB-only, they are not legally allowed to send it into NI.
If the pack is NI-only, we are not allowed to send it into GB.

It is the same law applied in both directions.

A dual-labelled medicine is a product where the exact same box is authorised for use in both:

  • Northern Ireland, and

  • Great Britain

These packs normally show both authorisation details on the packaging.

Only these dual-labelled products can move legally between NI and GB.

Unfortunately, many common POM-V and POM-VPS products are NOT dual-labelled, so they can only be supplied within the region they are authorised for.

Again, this is the same for vets and suppliers in England sending to NI.

We can normally deliver the following throughout the UK:

  • Pet foods and prescription diets (Hill’s, Purina, Orijen, etc.)

  • Supplements and nutraceuticals (YuMOVE, Protexin, etc.)

  • Most non-medicinal products such as shampoos, eye cleaners, joint supplements, wormers and other AVM-GSL items

  • Certain equine medicines and wormers that are known to be dual-labelled

On our website, these items will be shown as available for mainland UK delivery.

Many POM-V and some POM-VPS medicines cannot be sent to GB because the packs are authorised only for NI/EU or only for GB, not both.

Examples include:

  • Small-animal pain relief and anti-inflammatories

  • Many flea, tick and worm treatments for dogs and cats

  • Heart, thyroid, hormone and cancer medicines

  • Certain eye and ear drops

If a product falls into this category, it will be marked as “Northern Ireland delivery only”.

And again — this rule applies both ways:

If a GB vet or pharmacy has a GB-only pack, they also cannot legally ship it to Northern Ireland.

It depends:

  • If the medicine is dual-labelled, yes — we can usually supply it to GB with a valid prescription.

  • If the medicine is not dual-labelled, we are not legally allowed to supply it to GB, even with a correct prescription.

If we receive an order we cannot legally dispense, we will:

  1. Contact you

  2. Explain the reason

  3. Refund the restricted item(s)

  4. Return or destroy the prescription if requested

Don’t worry — if this happens:

  • We review the order

  • If an item cannot be sent to GB, we will contact you

  • We will cancel and refund the restricted product(s)

We will never send a medicine that we are not legally permitted to supply.

We are updating our listings so that:

  • Products that can be supplied anywhere in the UK are clearly marked

  • Restricted items show “Northern Ireland delivery only”
    NI only postage label

  • The checkout may block GB customers from restricted products

  • Products available UK wide have this label
    uk wide postage label

If you are unsure, please ask — we are happy to check for you.

Yes. If you live in Northern Ireland, we can usually supply your pet’s prescription without any restrictions. The NI/GB rules mainly affect customers in England, Scotland and Wales — not those based in NI.

To order a prescription medicine in Northern Ireland, here’s how it works:

1. Get a prescription from your vet

Your vet must examine your pet and issue a written prescription for the medication they need.
They can print it, email it to you, or send it directly to us (if they prefer).

The prescription must show:

  • Your vet’s details

  • Your pet’s name

  • The medicine name, strength and amount

  • The dosage instructions

  • The date issued

  • Your vet’s signature

Without this information, we are not allowed to dispense the medicine.

2. Place your order on our website

Add the medication to your basket and checkout as normal.
During checkout, you will be asked to upload your prescription.

3. Uploading your prescription

You can upload:

  • A photo taken on your phone

  • A scanned PDF

  • A screenshot (as long as it’s clear)

If you don’t have it yet, you can still complete your order — just choose “Upload later” and email it to us when you receive it.

4. We check and verify the prescription

Once we receive your order and prescription, a qualified member of our team checks that:

  • The prescription is valid

  • The information matches your order

  • The medicine is authorised for supply in Northern Ireland

If anything needs corrected, we’ll contact you straight away.

5. We dispense and ship your medicine

When everything is verified, your order is prepared and posted to your NI address.
Delivery times for NI orders are usually very fast.

Possibly.
If regulations change, we will update our procedures and let customers know.

Our goals are simple:

  • Keep pets and animals safe

  • Follow all legal requirements

  • Be transparent about what we can and cannot send

If you want to check whether a product can be shipped to your address, please contact us:

Email: info@petmeddirect.co.uk
Please include:

  • Product name and strength

  • Whether you are in NI or mainland UK, perhaps provide your address

  • Whether you have a prescription

We’ll confirm whether the product can legally be supplied.
