Equilis Prequenza Vaccine for Horses – What It Does
Equilis Prequenza vaccine for horses helps protect against equine influenza. Flu is a highly contagious respiratory disease that can spread quickly through yards and competitions.
Vaccination supports individual protection and reduces the overall risk of outbreaks. It is a key part of routine health care for most horses and ponies.
Benefits of Equilis Prequenza Vaccine for Horses
✔ Helps protect horses against equine influenza
✔ Supports strong, reliable immunity when used on schedule
✔ Pre-filled single-dose syringes for accurate dosing
✔ Suitable for primary vaccination and booster courses
✔ Helps meet many yard and competition vaccination rules
✔ Used as part of a wider preventative health programme
How Equilis Prequenza Works
Equilis Prequenza vaccine for horses contains inactivated flu antigen. The vaccine cannot cause influenza, but it does stimulate the horse’s immune system.
After vaccination, the immune system learns to recognise the flu components. If the horse later meets the real virus, the immune system can respond more quickly and effectively.
Vaccination may not prevent every mild infection. However, it can reduce the risk of severe illness and may lessen the impact of disease if exposure occurs.
When Vets Use Equilis Prequenza
Your vet may use Equilis Prequenza vaccine for horses to:
• Start a primary course
Young horses or horses with uncertain vaccine history begin a structured series of injections.
• Maintain regular boosters
Horses already vaccinated receive boosters at set intervals to keep protection up to date.
• Meet rules for competition and livery
Many events, riding schools and livery yards require current influenza vaccination.
Your vet will check your horse’s age, history, passport records and risk level. They will then design a vaccination plan and record each dose.
How the Vaccine Is Given
Equilis Prequenza vaccine for horses comes in pre-filled 1 dose syringes supplied in packs of 5. Each syringe contains one full dose for one horse.
A vet or trained professional must give the injection. Owners should not administer the vaccine unless the vet has clearly instructed them to do so.
Your vet will:
-
Use a new sterile needle and syringe for each horse
-
Inject the vaccine using the recommended route and site
-
Record the date, batch number and expiry in the passport
Keep your horse calm and safely restrained during vaccination. Follow any aftercare advice your vet gives.
After Vaccination and Monitoring
Most horses cope very well with vaccination. Some may show mild, short-lived signs such as a slight temperature rise or mild tenderness at the injection site.
Contact your vet if you notice:
-
Marked swelling, heat or pain at the injection site
-
Ongoing dullness or reduced appetite
-
High temperature or any other worrying signs
Your vet can then advise whether these signs are expected or if they need further checks.
