Otomax ear drops for dogs – what they are for

Otomax ear drops for dogs are used to treat external ear infections (otitis externa) when your vet has confirmed they are suitable. These infections often involve bacteria, yeast and inflammation in the outer ear canal.

By treating infection and calming inflammation, Otomax can help reduce pain, itching and discharge. Many dogs shake their heads less and seem more comfortable once treatment is underway.

Benefits of Otomax ear drops for dogs

✔ POM-V prescription ear drops for dogs
✔ Treat bacterial and yeast ear infections when advised by your vet
✔ Help reduce redness, swelling, smell and discharge in the ear canal
✔ Oily suspension coats the ear lining for good contact
✔ Dropper nozzle makes it easier to apply the right amount

How Otomax ear drops for dogs work

Otomax ear drops for dogs contain three types of active ingredient:

  • An antibiotic to target susceptible bacteria

  • An antifungal to target yeast in the ear canal

  • A steroid to reduce inflammation and irritation

Together, these ingredients help bring infection under control and soothe sore tissues in the outer ear. As the infection settles, most dogs scratch and rub their ears less and feel more at ease.

Otomax does not treat every cause of ear disease. Your vet will decide if it is the right choice after examining your dog’s ears and, if needed, taking swabs or samples.

When vets may prescribe Otomax ear drops for dogs

Your vet may prescribe Otomax ear drops for dogs when:

  • There is an external ear infection involving bacteria and/or yeast

  • The ear drum is intact and it is safe to use ear drops

  • Underlying issues, such as foreign bodies or ear mites, have been checked and managed

Ear problems often have deeper causes, such as allergies, ear shape, moisture or hormonal disease. Otomax treats the infection and inflammation. Your vet may also plan long-term management of these underlying problems to reduce future flare-ups.

How to use Otomax ear drops for dogs

Always follow your vet’s instructions and the label on the bottle. As a general guide:

  • Shake the bottle if the label tells you to do so

  • Gently lift the ear flap and hold it up so you can see the opening

  • Place the nozzle just inside the ear canal entrance, without forcing it

  • Squeeze the bottle to give the number of drops your vet has prescribed

  • Massage the base of the ear gently to help spread the drops along the canal

Your vet will tell you:

  • How many drops to put in each ear

  • How many times a day to use Otomax ear drops for dogs

  • How many days or weeks to continue the course

Do not stop early, even if the ear looks better, unless your vet asks you to. If you miss a dose or are unsure whether the full dose went in, contact your vet for advice rather than guessing.

Ear cleaning and ongoing care

Otomax ear drops for dogs work best when the ears are cleaned as your vet advises. They may:

  • Clean the ears in the clinic before starting treatment

  • Recommend a specific ear cleaner for use on non-treatment days

  • Show you how to gently wipe away surface debris at home

Only use ear cleaners and techniques approved by your vet. Never push cotton buds down into the ear canal, as this can cause damage and push debris deeper.

You can also help by:

  • Keeping your dog’s ears as dry as possible after swimming or bathing

  • Checking ears regularly for redness, smell or discharge

  • Seeking veterinary advice early if your dog starts scratching or shaking its head again

Safety information

Otomax ear drops for dogs are a POM-V medicine. They must only be used for the dog named on the prescription and only under veterinary supervision.

Important safety points:

  • Do not use if your vet suspects a damaged ear drum unless they say it is safe

  • Do not use Otomax in eyes, mouth or on skin away from the ear canal

  • Tell your vet about any other medicines or supplements your dog is receiving

  • Contact your vet if your dog seems more uncomfortable, tilts the head, loses balance or if the ear looks worse

Some dogs can be sensitive to any ear product. If you notice marked redness, swelling, pain or unusual behaviour after application, stop using the drops and speak to your vet promptly.

People applying Otomax ear drops for dogs should wash their hands afterwards and avoid getting the drops in their own eyes or mouth. Store the bottles as directed on the label and keep them out of sight and reach of children and animals. Return any unused or expired medicine to your vet or pharmacist for safe disposal.

Used exactly as your vet directs, Otomax 0.584 mg/ml cutaneous spray solution for dogs can play an important part in clearing ear infections and helping keep your dog’s ears comfortable and healthy.
