Why Has My Prescription Expired?
Expiry dates are set by your vet, not by us
Quick Answer
- Most prescriptions are valid for up to 6 months from when they're signed
- Your vet may set a shorter or different valid period
- We can't dispense after the expiry date or any "no further dispenses after" date
- A new prescription from your vet is needed once one has expired
Why Prescriptions Have an Expiry Date
An expiry date helps make sure your pet's treatment is reviewed regularly and stays appropriate for their ongoing health. This date is set by your vet, based on their professional judgement.
What This Means for Your Order
- We're unable to dispense any medicine once a prescription has passed its expiry date
- If your vet has written "no further dispenses after" a date, we must follow this
- We can't alter, extend or override any of these dates ourselves
- A new, valid prescription from your vet is needed to continue treatment
If Your Pet Needs to Continue Treatment
- Contact your vet practice to arrange a new prescription
- Once you have it, upload or email it to us in the usual way
- If you're unsure whether your current prescription has actually expired, please contact Pet Med Direct and we can check this for you
How Pet Med Direct Can Help
Once you have a new, valid prescription, we'll check it in the usual way before anything is dispensed. This usually takes 1–2 working days.
Some treatments require a valid veterinary prescription. Pet Med Direct can only supply prescription medicines after the prescription has been checked. Always follow your vet's advice and the directions on the medicine label.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Pet Med Direct extend an expired prescription?
No, we're unable to alter, extend or override the dates set by your vet. A new prescription needs to come directly from them.
How long do prescriptions usually last?
Most are valid for up to 6 months from when they're signed, unless your vet has stated a shorter or different period.
What if I didn't realise my prescription had expired?
This is a common situation. Simply get a new prescription from your vet and send it to us in the usual way.
Will my order be cancelled if my prescription expires while I'm waiting?
If you are unsure what happens to your specific order in this situation, please contact Pet Med Direct with your order number and we will help.
