How ordering prescription dog medication works
At Pet Med Direct, we make ordering your dog’s prescription medicine quick and straightforward. You can order first and send us the prescription afterwards — we check it before anything is dispensed.
Get a prescription from your vet
Your vet will issue a written prescription for the medication your dog needs. Your vet may charge a reasonable fee for issuing it, so check with your practice before you order.
Place your order
Select the medication your vet has prescribed and add it to your basket. At checkout you’ll be asked to confirm your dog’s details so we can make sure everything matches the prescription.
Send us the prescription
Upload a clear photo or PDF of your prescription during checkout, or send it to us afterwards. Once our team has checked it, we dispatch your order. Need help? See the Prescription Help Centre.
Or fill in the relevant POM-VPS form after checkout. Living in Northern Ireland? See prescriptions in Northern Ireland.
Prescription and non-prescription dog medicine
Prescription dog medication (POM-V) must be prescribed by your own vet, because they need to assess your dog before certain treatments are used. Non-prescription dog medication can be ordered directly, without needing a prescription first.
Your dog’s health is at the heart of everything we do. From joint support and skin care to heart medication and long-term conditions, we provide trusted treatments for common conditions at fair prices. If you ever need help choosing the correct product or understanding your prescription, our team is here to guide you.
Cold chain medicines, delivered safely
Some dog medications, such as insulin or certain liquid suspensions, must be kept refrigerated in transit. For these we use Royal Mail Special Delivery (Next Day Before 1pm), temperature-controlled insulated packaging, and ice packs to maintain safe temperatures throughout transit — so your dog’s medicine arrives in the condition it should.
Dog Medication FAQs
Do I need a prescription to buy dog medication online?
Prescription-only veterinary medicines (POM-V) can only be supplied against a valid written prescription from your dog’s own vet, who has assessed your dog and prescribed the treatment. Other dog medications, such as certain parasite treatments and supplements, can be ordered without a prescription.
How do I send you my dog’s prescription?
You can upload a photo or scan of your vet’s prescription during checkout, or use our upload page at any time after ordering. If your vet has issued a paper prescription that must be posted, send us the original and we’ll match it to your order.
What’s the difference between prescription and non-prescription dog medication?
Prescription dog medication (POM-V) must be prescribed by your own vet, because they need to assess your dog before certain treatments are used. Non-prescription dog medication can be ordered directly, without needing a prescription first.
How is refrigerated dog medication delivered?
Dog medications that need refrigerating, such as insulin, are sent using Royal Mail Special Delivery (Next Day Before 1pm) in temperature-controlled, insulated packaging with ice packs, so they arrive at a safe temperature.
How long does delivery take?
Non-prescription orders are usually dispatched the same or next working day. Prescription orders are dispatched once we’ve checked your vet’s prescription, so the sooner it reaches us, the sooner your order is on its way.
