About Optimmune Eye Ointment
Optimmune Eye Ointment for Dogs is a prescription-only veterinary treatment for chronic dry eye, also known as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). It contains the active ingredient cyclosporine A (0.2 %), an immunomodulator that reduces inflammation of the tear glands and stimulates natural tear production. Regular use protects the cornea from ulceration, infection and scarring.
When Vets Prescribe Optimmune
Veterinarians recommend Optimmune for dogs with:
-
Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye syndrome)
-
Chronic superficial keratitis (pannus)
-
Reduced tear flow after infection or surgery
-
Breed-related tear gland inflammation (e.g. Cocker Spaniels, West Highland White Terriers)
By restoring natural tear balance and reducing inflammation, Optimmune helps maintain clear, comfortable eyes and prevents long-term damage.
How Optimmune Works
Cyclosporine acts on immune cells within the tear glands to suppress the overactive inflammatory response that causes tear gland damage. This action allows normal tear secretion to resume and protects the eye surface from dryness and infection. It also reduces corneal clouding and pain associated with chronic dry eye.
Dosage and Administration
Apply a small ribbon (around 0.5 cm) of ointment to the affected eye every 12 hours, or as directed by your veterinarian.
-
Wash hands before use.
-
Gently pull down the lower eyelid to create a pocket.
-
Apply the ointment and allow the dog to blink.
For severe cases, vets may recommend additional lubricants (such as Lubrithal or Remend) alongside Optimmune for comfort and hydration.
Precautions and Warnings
Optimmune is for dogs only and should not be used in cats or other species. Avoid contact between the tube tip and the eye surface to prevent contamination. Do not use if the eye is ulcerated or infected without veterinary direction. Some dogs may experience mild eye irritation when starting treatment; this usually resolves within a few days.
Storage and Shelf Life
Store below 25 °C and protect from direct sunlight. Once opened, use within one month. Replace the cap securely after each use and keep out of reach of children and animals.

Frequently Asked Questions
How soon will I see results?
Visible improvement often appears within a few weeks, but full tear production may take several months.
Can I stop treatment if my dog’s eyes look better?
No. Dry eye is a chronic condition and requires ongoing management. Stopping suddenly may cause relapse.
Can Optimmune be used with eye lubricants?
Yes. Apply lubricants about 10 minutes after Optimmune to avoid dilution.
Is it safe for all breeds?
Yes. It is commonly used across many breeds, especially those predisposed to tear gland conditions.
What if I miss a dose?
Apply as soon as you remember and then continue on the regular schedule. Do not double the dose.
