Skin Problems in Dogs?
Why does it happen?
This page is for information and reference purposes only.
It is not a substitute for professional veterinary advice, diagnosis, or treatment.
Always speak to a qualified veterinary surgeon about your pet’s individual needs before starting, changing, or stopping any treatment.
What Are Common Skin Problems in Dogs?
Skin diseases (dermatological issues) are among the most common reasons dogs visit the vet. It can range from mild itching to severe, long-term conditions.
Healthy skin is important for comfort and preventing infections.

Why Do Skin Problems Happen?
Dog skin problems usually result from one or more of these:
Allergies (very common):
Environmental allergies (atopy) – pollen, dust mites, mould.
Food allergies.
Flea allergy (even one flea bite can cause major itching).
Parasites:
Fleas, mites (e.g. sarcoptic or demodectic mange), and lice.
Infections:
Bacterial (often secondary to allergies)
Yeast (Malassezia) – common in folds or greasy skin
Fungal (ringworm)
Other causes:
Hormonal issues (e.g. hypothyroidism, Cushing’s)
Poor diet or nutrition
Contact irritants
Immune system disorders
Many dogs have multiple factors at the same time (e.g. allergy + secondary infection).
Main Signs of Skin Problems
Constant scratching, licking, or chewing
Red, inflamed, or thickened skin
Hair loss (alopecia)
Greasy, smelly, or flaky skin
Recurrent ear infections
Hot spots (moist, red, painful areas)
Scabs, crusts, or pustules
Dark or leathery skin in chronic cases
How We Treat Skin Problems
Treatment depends on the cause, but the goal is always to relieve itching, treat infection, and address the root problem.
Common Treatment Approaches:
Find and remove the cause (e.g. strict flea control, food trial, allergy testing).
Infection control:
Antibiotics or antifungal medication (tablets, creams, or medicated shampoos).
Itch relief:
Anti-itch tablets (e.g. Apoquel, Cytopoint injections).
Short courses of steroids (used carefully under veterinary advice).
Medicated baths: Special shampoos to soothe skin and remove allergens.
Long-term management:
Allergen-specific immunotherapy (allergy injections or drops) for environmental allergies.
Daily omega-3 supplements and hypoallergenic diets.
Regular grooming and flea prevention.
Important: Many skin cases need lifelong management rather than a one-time cure.
Key Take-Home Messages
Itching is not normal — persistent scratching usually means something is wrong.
Secondary infections make the skin look much worse, so treating the underlying cause is essential.
Early treatment prevents chronic skin thickening and discomfort.
Good flea control is the first step in almost every itchy dog.
Work closely with your vet — skin cases often require follow-up visits and trial and error to find the best solution.
Many dogs with skin problems can live very comfortable lives with the right diagnosis and ongoing care. If your dog is itchy or has skin changes, don’t wait — book a vet visit. Chronic skin disease can seriously affect quality of life.
