Why Dental Care Matters in Dogs

Dental disease is one of the most common health problems in dogs.  By the age of 3, most dogs already have some form of it. Bacteria build up on the teeth, causing bad breath and pain. Good dental care greatly improves comfort and can add years to your dog’s life.

Common Dental Problems

Plaque and tartar (calculus) buildup on teeth

Gingivitis (inflamed gums)

Periodontal disease (infection deep around the roots of teeth)

Broken or worn teeth

Tooth root abscesses

Crowded teeth (especially in small/toy breeds)

Small breeds (e.g. Yorkshire Terriers, Chihuahuas) and flat-faced breeds are at higher risk.

Signs Your Dog May Need Dental Care

Bad breath (halitosis)

Red, swollen, or bleeding gums

Yellow/brown tartar on teeth

Dropping food or eating slowly

Chewing on one side only

Pawing at the mouth or face

Reduced appetite or weight loss

Lethargy (in advanced cases)

Many dogs hide their mouth pain extremely well, so regular checks are essential.

Routine Dental Care Protocol
Recommended schedule:

Annual dental examination by your vet (ideally every 6–12 months for small breeds or older dogs).

Professional dental cleaning under anaesthesia when needed (this includes scaling, polishing, and full mouth X-rays).

At-home care (daily or several times per week):

Tooth brushing with dog-specific toothpaste (never human toothpaste).

Dental chews, wipes, or water additives approved by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC).

Special dental diets that help reduce tartar.

Regular inspection of your dog’s teeth and gums.

Dental Care Matters
Treatment for Dental Disease

Professional cleaning under general anaesthesia, which is carried out by a Vet (the safest way to clean below the gum line).

Extractions of severely diseased or broken teeth.

Antibiotics and pain relief if there is an infection.

Ongoing home care to prevent recurrence.

Key Take-Home Messages

Prevention is much better (and cheaper) than treating advanced dental disease.

Bad breath is not normal — it is usually a sign of a problem.

Good dental health improves overall well-being, energy, and appetite.

Small and senior dogs especially benefit from regular dental attention.

Start early: getting puppies used to tooth brushing makes lifelong care much easier.

Pro tip: Combine dental checks with annual vaccinations or health checks to make it easier to remember.
