My Prescription File Is Too Large — What Should I Do?
A few quick fixes to get under the 8MB limit
Quick Answer
- The upload limit is 8MB
- Photos taken on modern phones can sometimes go over this
- Saving as a PDF, or reducing the photo resolution, usually solves it
- If it's still too large, you can email it to us instead
Ways to Reduce Your File Size
- Save as a PDF rather than a large image file, if your phone or scanner gives you the option.
- Take the photo again at a slightly lower resolution, keeping the text sharp and readable.
- Crop out anything unnecessary around the edges, while keeping the full prescription in shot.
- Send just one page at a time if your prescription has multiple pages, using the option to upload up to 3 files.
Accepted File Types
The upload form accepts PDF, JPG and PNG files, all up to 8MB. Sticking to these formats, alongside a smaller file size, gives the best chance of a smooth upload.
Still Too Large?

How Pet Med Direct Can Help
A large file size is simply a technical hurdle, not a problem with your prescription itself. Once it reaches us, by whichever method works, it's checked the same way.
Some treatments require a valid veterinary prescription. Pet Med Direct can only supply prescription medicines after the prescription has been checked. Always follow your vet's advice and the directions on the medicine label.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are photos sometimes larger than scans?
Modern phone cameras often take very high-resolution photos, which can result in larger file sizes than a typical scanned document.
Will reducing the file size make it harder to read?
A small reduction in resolution shouldn't make the text hard to read. The aim is simply to get under 8MB while keeping the details clear.
Can I send my prescription as several smaller files?
Yes, you can upload up to 3 files, which can be useful if your prescription covers more than one page.
Is there a file size limit for emailing instead?
If you're unsure about email file size limits on your device, please contact Pet Med Direct and we can advise on the best way to send it.
