Getting pet medication in Northern Ireland changed in 2026

Since 1 January 2026, online retailers based in Great Britain can no longer supply veterinary medicines to Northern Ireland. Several well-known online pet pharmacies have stopped delivering to NI addresses altogether — which has left many NI pet owners wondering where to order their pet’s medication.

Pet Med Direct is based in Northern Ireland and is part of an NI veterinary practice, so NI pet owners can still order pet medication online from us. We supply the medicines authorised for Northern Ireland, and every prescription is checked by our veterinary team before it is dispensed.

If you live in Northern Ireland, we can usually supply your pet’s prescription without any restrictions. The NI–GB rules mainly affect customers in England, Scotland and Wales — the questions further down this page explain what we can and cannot send to Great Britain.

These supply rules are a legal requirement, not a shop policy — and they apply in both directions between Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

How pet prescriptions work in Northern Ireland

Prescription medicines need a valid written prescription from the vet who has your pet under their care. Here is the whole process, start to finish.

Get a prescription from your vet

Your vet examines your pet and issues a written prescription. They can print it, email it to you, or send it straight to us.

Place your order online

Add the prescribed medication to your basket and check out as normal. You can pay before the prescription reaches us.

Upload the prescription

Upload a clear photo, scan or PDF at checkout — or use our upload page at any time once you have it.

We check and verify

Our veterinary team confirms the prescription is valid, matches your order and is authorised for supply in Northern Ireland.

We dispense and deliver

Once verified, your order is prepared and posted to your NI address. Delivery within Northern Ireland is usually very fast.

No prescription is needed for foods, supplements and many flea, tick and worming treatments.

A real Northern Ireland veterinary practice behind every order

Pet Med Direct is the online pharmacy of Farm Vet Services, a working RCVS-registered veterinary practice based in Clogher, Co. Tyrone.

That matters when you are buying medicine rather than pet food. Prescriptions are checked by veterinary staff, refrigerated medicines are handled properly, and if something on an order does not look right for the animal, we ask before we dispense it.

Northern Ireland pet medication questions

Yes. If you live in Northern Ireland we can usually supply your pet’s prescription without any restrictions — the NI–GB supply rules mainly affect customers in England, Scotland and Wales. Order online, upload your vet’s prescription, and our team checks it before your medication is dispensed and posted to your NI address.

Since 1 January 2026, retailers based in Great Britain cannot supply veterinary medicines to Northern Ireland unless the product is specifically authorised for both regions. Most are not, so many GB online pharmacies have withdrawn NI delivery entirely. Pet Med Direct is based in Northern Ireland, so we can continue supplying NI-authorised medicines to NI customers.

A dual-labelled medicine is a product where the exact same pack is authorised for use in both Northern Ireland and Great Britain, with both authorisations shown on the packaging. Only dual-labelled products can move legally between NI and GB. Many common POM-V and POM-VPS products are not dual-labelled, so they can only be supplied within the region they are authorised for.

It depends on the product. If the medicine is dual-labelled we can usually supply it to Great Britain with a valid prescription. If it is not dual-labelled, we are not legally allowed to send it to GB — even with a correct prescription. If we receive an order we cannot legally dispense, we contact you, explain why, and refund the restricted items. Foods, supplements and most non-medicinal products can be delivered throughout the UK.

Your vet’s details, your pet’s name, the medicine name, strength and amount, the dosage instructions, the date issued, and your vet’s signature. Without this information we are not allowed to dispense the medicine. The Pet Prescription Help Centre explains everything your vet needs to write.

Restricted items are marked “Northern Ireland delivery only” on their product pages, and products available UK-wide are labelled as such. If you are unsure, contact us with the product name and strength and whether you are in NI or Great Britain, and we will confirm whether it can legally be supplied to you.

More detail, including repeat prescriptions and refunds for restricted items, is in the Pet Prescription Help Centre.
