What systemic hypertension means

Blood pressure describes the force of blood against the artery walls. When that pressure stays too high for too long, it gradually damages organs that rely on fine networks of small blood vessels.

The authorised product literature names the eyes, the kidneys, the heart and the central nervous system as the main organs at risk. This matters because affected cats often seem perfectly well at home, so owners rarely spot a problem before the vet measures it.

Feline hypertension is usually secondary, which means another condition drives it. For that reason the product literature specifically asks vets to identify and treat the primary cause or any co-morbidities, such as hyperthyroidism, chronic kidney disease and diabetes. In other words, Amodip manages the blood pressure itself while your vet investigates and treats whatever sits behind it.

How Amodip 1.25 mg Tablets for Cats work

Amodip 1.25 mg tablets work through amlodipine, which blocks calcium from entering the muscle cells that line the arteries. Those cells then relax, the arteries widen, and blood meets less resistance as it flows, so blood pressure falls.

Importantly, amlodipine acts slowly rather than sharply. The manufacturer treats this gradual onset as a genuine advantage, because sudden drops in blood pressure and reflex rises in heart rate therefore tend not to occur.

For the same reason, do not expect an overnight change. Levels of the medicine build towards a steady state over roughly two weeks, so vets normally reassess the response after fourteen days.

How to give Amodip 1.25 mg Tablets for Cats

Always follow the instructions your vet gives you, because they set the dose from your cat’s weight and from the blood pressure readings they have taken. As a guide to what the authorised literature states, the recommended starting dose is 0.125 to 0.25 mg per kg once daily.

After fourteen days the vet may then double that dose, or raise it to a maximum of 0.5 mg per kg once daily, if the blood pressure has not responded well enough. Never adjust the dose yourself.

You can give the tablet straight into your cat’s mouth, or alongside a small amount of food. Since food does not interfere with absorption, either approach works. Try to give the dose at roughly the same time each day.

Dividing the tablet

The score line lets you break a tablet into two equal halves, which is how many smaller cats take their dose. However, halves do not keep. Return an unused half to its blister and use it within 24 hours, then discard anything left after that. Never try to quarter an Amodip tablet, because the licence only supports a two-way break.

Veterinary monitoring

Treating hypertension is a long-term commitment rather than a short course, so your vet will want to review your cat regularly while she takes Amodip 1.25 mg tablets. Before starting, vets confirm that the raised readings are genuine by measuring systolic blood pressure on more than one day, which rules out the stress response often called white-coat hypertension.

Once treatment begins, the authorised literature recommends measuring systolic blood pressure routinely, for example every six to eight weeks.

Your vet may also check blood potassium and chloride during treatment, because amlodipine can sometimes lower both. Older cats with chronic kidney disease may already run low on potassium as a result of that underlying disease, so these checks genuinely matter. • Amlodipine also lowers human blood pressure, so keep tablets away from children and wash your hands after handling them

Possible side effects

The product literature lists vomiting, overgrowth of the gums (gingival hyperplasia) and a localised enlarged lymph node as very common. Diarrhoea, lethargy, dehydration and loss of appetite appear as common. Vomiting and diarrhoea are usually mild and pass quickly.
