What is Meloxidyl 20 mg/ml injection used for?

The authorised uses, by species, are:

Cattle

  • Acute respiratory infection, with appropriate antibiotic therapy, to reduce clinical signs.
  • Diarrhoea, with oral re-hydration therapy, to reduce clinical signs in calves over one week of age and young, non-lactating cattle.
  • Adjunctive therapy in acute mastitis, in combination with antibiotic therapy.
  • Relief of post-operative pain following dehorning in calves.

Pigs

  • Non-infectious locomotor disorders, to reduce the symptoms of lameness and inflammation.

How Meloxidyl is given

Meloxidyl 20 mg/ml is an injection. It must be given by or under the direction of a veterinary surgeon, as directed by the prescribing veterinary surgeon, who will decide the dose, the route and whether it is combined with other treatment. Avoid introducing contamination during use.

Safety information

Do not use Meloxidyl 20 mg/ml in:

  • horses under 6 weeks of age
  • animals with impaired liver, heart or kidney function, or with bleeding (haemorrhagic) disorders
  • animals with evidence of gastrointestinal ulcers
  • animals with a known allergy to meloxicam or any other ingredient
  • calves under one week of age, when used for diarrhoea
  • pregnant or lactating mares, or horses producing milk for human consumption (cattle and pigs can be treated during pregnancy and lactation)

Take care and tell your vet:

  • Do not give with glucocorticosteroids, other NSAIDs or anticoagulants.
  • Avoid use in very severely dehydrated, low blood volume or low blood pressure animals that need fluids by injection, because of a risk of kidney toxicity.
  • For dehorning, Meloxidyl alone will not give adequate pain relief during the procedure. Another suitable analgesic is needed.
  • If pain relief in equine colic is inadequate, the diagnosis should be reviewed, as surgery may be needed.
  • If side effects occur, stop treatment and seek veterinary advice. A slight, short-lived swelling at the injection site can occur. Allergic-type reactions are very rare.

Withdrawal periods

These are the withdrawal periods stated in the SPC. Do not supply meat, offal or milk from treated animals for human consumption until they have passed.

  • Cattle: meat and offal 15 days; milk 5 days.
  • Pigs: meat and offal 5 days.
  • Horses: meat and offal 5 days.

Safety for people

Accidental self-injection may cause pain. People with known sensitivity to NSAIDs should avoid contact with the product. After accidental self-injection, seek medical advice immediately and show the leaflet or label.

Storage and shelf life

No special storage conditions are needed. Shelf life as packaged is 30 months. Once the vial has been opened, use within 28 days.
