PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)
What Onsior Is
Onsior Tablets for Dogs contain robenacoxib, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) belonging to the coxib class. It is licensed for use in dogs for the treatment of pain and inflammation associated with chronic osteoarthritis, and for treatment of pain and inflammation following soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery.
When Vets Prescribe Onsior
Veterinary surgeons may prescribe Onsior when a dog:
-
Suffers from osteoarthritis and shows signs of pain, stiffness or reduced mobility.
-
Undergoes soft tissue or orthopaedic surgery and requires pain management and reduction of inflammation.
The treatment aims to improve comfort, mobility and quality of life.
How Onsior Works
Robenacoxib selectively inhibits the COX-2 enzyme, reducing the synthesis of prostaglandins involved in pain and inflammation. It reaches higher concentrations at sites of inflammation and clears from systemic circulation faster, which supports effectiveness with reduced risk to non-target tissues.
The tablets are given once daily at a dose of approximately 1 mg/kg body weight, with a range of 1-2 mg/kg depending on the clinical response.
Dosage & Administration
-
Administer on an empty stomach (at least 30 minutes before or after feeding) since better efficacy is achieved when not given with food.
-
Example dosing table (for osteoarthritis):
-
2.5 to <5 kg: 1 × 5 mg tablet
-
5 to <10 kg: 1 × 10 mg tablet
-
10 to <20 kg: 1 × 20 mg tablet
-
20 to <40 kg: 1 × 40 mg tablet
-
40 to 80 kg: 2 × 40 mg tablets
-
-
Re-evaluate after ~10 days; if no clinical improvement, treatment should be discontinued. For long-term use, monitor liver enzymes at 2, 4 and 8 weeks, then every 3-6 months.
Precautions & Contra-Indications
-
Do not use in dogs with existing gastrointestinal ulceration, bleeding, hepatic disease, or dogs under weight <2.5 kg or <3 months of age.
-
Avoid use with other NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Concomitant nephrotoxic or highly protein-bound drugs require close monitoring.
-
Use with caution in dogs that are dehydrated, hypovolaemic, hypotensive or have impaired cardiac/renal function.
-
Side effects may include vomiting, diarrhoea, decreased appetite, raised liver enzymes.
-
Wash hands after handling. Accidental ingestion by humans, especially children, may cause severe adverse effects.
-
Use during pregnancy or lactation is not recommended since safety has not been established.
Storage & Handling
Store below 25 °C, in the original package. Keep unused tablets out of reach of children and other animals. Use only as directed by the veterinary surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How quickly will my dog benefit?
Many dogs show improved mobility and reduced discomfort within one week of consistent daily use.
Can I stop the tablet if my dog seems better?
No. Discontinue only under veterinary advice. Osteoarthritis is a chronic condition; maintaining control is important.
What if my dog is also on other pain medicines?
Combining NSAIDs increases the risk of adverse effects. Always consult your vet before adding other medications.
Does it require a prescription?
Yes. Onsior is POM-V and must be supplied against a valid veterinary prescription.
What monitoring is needed for long-term use?
Vet may check liver and kidney function, and screen for signs of GI issues. Treatment may be adjusted or stopped if adverse signs appear.
