Isaderm Gel for Dogs
PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)
Zenrelia tablets for dogs are a once-daily prescription medicine used to control itching and skin inflammation caused by allergic and atopic dermatitis in dogs. They contain ilunocitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that helps interrupt the itch–scratch cycle and reduce redness, irritation and discomfort.
Zenrelia is available in four film-coated tablet strengths – 4.8 mg, 6.4 mg, 8.5 mg and 15 mg – so your vet can choose a dose that suits your dog’s weight and needs. It is licensed for dogs from 12 months of age for the treatment of pruritus associated with allergic dermatitis and the clinical signs of atopic dermatitis. Zenrelia is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V) and must only be used under veterinary guidance.

PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)
Zenrelia tablets for dogs – once-daily relief for allergic and atopic dermatitis
Zenrelia tablets for dogs are a modern prescription treatment for itchy, inflamed skin caused by allergies. Many dogs suffer from allergic or atopic dermatitis, which can lead to constant scratching, chewing, redness and disturbed sleep. Zenrelia contains ilunocitinib, a Janus kinase (JAK) inhibitor that targets key itch and inflammation pathways in the immune system. Because of this targeted action, it helps to break the itch–scratch cycle and allows the skin time to heal.
What Zenrelia is used for
Vets prescribe Zenrelia for:
-
Treatment of pruritus (itching) associated with allergic dermatitis in dogs
-
Treatment of the clinical manifestations of atopic dermatitis in dogs
These conditions can be triggered by things like environmental allergens, flea allergy, food allergy or contact allergy. Zenrelia helps reduce the itch and inflammation while your vet manages the underlying cause with parasite control, diet changes or other therapies.
Available strengths and target dogs
Zenrelia is supplied as yellow, oblong, film-coated tablets with a score line, which allows them to be split into halves if needed. The range includes four strengths:
-
4.8 mg Zenrelia tablets for dogs
-
6.4 mg Zenrelia tablets for dogs
-
8.5 mg Zenrelia tablets for dogs
-
15 mg Zenrelia tablets for dogs
The tablets are intended for dogs that are at least 12 months old. Some product literature also notes that dogs must meet a minimum bodyweight (for example 3 kg), however your vet will confirm whether Zenrelia is suitable and will select the correct strength or combination of strengths for your dog.
How Zenrelia works
Ilunocitinib acts on JAK signalling pathways involved in the immune response that drives itch and skin inflammation. By selectively blocking these pathways, Zenrelia reduces the signals that tell your dog’s brain to feel itchy and reduces inflammatory changes in the skin. As a result, many dogs experience:
-
Less scratching, chewing and licking
-
Improved comfort and sleep quality
-
Reduced redness and skin lesions over time
Because Zenrelia is given once daily, dosing is straightforward, and it is designed for both short-term flare-ups and long-term management when recommended by your vet.
How Zenrelia is given
Zenrelia is an oral tablet given once a day at about the same time each day. It can usually be given with or without food, but you must always follow the advice on your dog’s prescription and the package leaflet. Your vet will calculate the correct dose for your dog based on bodyweight and clinical response, using one or more of the available strengths.
Important points:
-
Give only the amount prescribed by your vet
-
Try to keep dosing time consistent each day
-
Do not change the dose, skip doses or stop suddenly without veterinary advice
-
If you miss a dose or your dog spits out a tablet, contact your vet for guidance
Zenrelia is often part of a wider skin-care plan that may also include flea control, skin and ear treatments, medicated shampoos, dietary changes and environmental management.
Monitoring and long-term use
Allergic and atopic dermatitis are usually long-term conditions. Therefore many dogs need ongoing management even when their skin looks improved. Vets may use Zenrelia during the initial work-up and then continue it as a maintenance treatment if your dog responds well. Because it is a prescription medicine, your vet will arrange regular check-ups and may recommend periodic blood tests or skin reassessments to ensure Zenrelia remains safe and effective for your dog.
Safety, contraindications and precautions
Zenrelia is not suitable for every dog. According to the official product information:
-
Do not use Zenrelia in dogs with evidence of immune suppression
-
Do not use in dogs with progressive malignant neoplasia (certain cancers)
-
Do not use in dogs with known hypersensitivity to ilunocitinib or any excipient
Caution is needed in dogs with other serious underlying illnesses. Your vet will evaluate your dog’s full medical history before prescribing Zenrelia and may discuss alternative options if this treatment is not appropriate.
Possible side effects
As with any medicine, some dogs may experience side effects. Reported reactions can include digestive upset, changes in appetite, alterations in blood test results or other signs linked to changes in immune function. Serious reactions are uncommon, however you should contact your vet promptly if you notice anything worrying such as:
-
Marked lethargy or collapse
-
Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
-
Unusual bruising, bleeding or infections
-
Rapid worsening of existing lumps or tumours
Your vet may adjust the dose, perform further tests or stop the medicine if needed.
Handling advice for owners
Zenrelia is a veterinary prescription medicine, but it can still pose risks to people if handled incorrectly. The product literature advises that:
-
Tablets should be kept out of sight and reach of children
-
Hands should be washed after handling tablets
-
People with known immune problems, or women who are pregnant or trying to conceive, should take particular care and avoid unnecessary contact
If someone accidentally ingests a tablet, medical advice should be sought immediately and the packaging or leaflet shown to the doctor.
Frequently asked questions about Zenrelia tablets for dogs
Is Zenrelia a prescription-only medicine?
Yes. Zenrelia is a POM-V product, so a vet must examine your dog and issue a prescription before it can be supplied.
How long will my dog need Zenrelia?
Some dogs only need Zenrelia for a short period during a flare-up. Others may need long-term treatment as part of ongoing management of atopic dermatitis. Your vet will advise on the expected duration and will review this over time.
Can Zenrelia cure atopic dermatitis?
Zenrelia helps control the signs of allergic and atopic dermatitis, but it does not cure the underlying allergic tendency. It is usually combined with other measures such as flea control, diet trials and skin-care routines to give the best long-term results.
Can I swap my dog from other allergy tablets to Zenrelia myself?
No. Any change between different prescription medications (for example from steroids or another JAK inhibitor) must be planned and supervised by your vet. This helps to avoid gaps in control or overlapping effects on the immune system.
What if my dog is difficult to tablet?
Zenrelia tablets are small film-coated tablets and some strengths are scored. However, every dog is different. Your vet team can demonstrate tablet-giving techniques and may suggest pill pockets, use with food where appropriate, or alternative strategies.
Always follow the advice in the package leaflet and your vet’s specific instructions. If you have any concerns about Zenrelia, dosing, side effects or your dog’s response, contact your veterinary practice for guidance.
