Palladia tablets for dogs

What Palladia is used for

Palladia (toceranib phosphate) is licensed to treat non-resectable, recurrent, cutaneous mast cell tumours (Patnaik grade II or III) in dogs. Surgery remains the first choice where a tumour can be fully removed. Response to treatment varies between dogs, and your vet will monitor progress closely — Palladia is not described as a cure.

Available strengths

10mg, 15mg and 50mg film-coated tablets, boxes of 20. Dose is calculated and adjusted by your vet only.

How it’s given

Given orally, on the schedule your vet sets (typically every other day), with or without food. Do not alter the dose or schedule. Regular check-ups and blood tests are required — weekly for the first six weeks, then every six weeks. Treatment is usually paused at least 3 days before any surgery.

Who should not receive it

• Pregnant or lactating bitches, or dogs intended for breeding
• Dogs under 2 years old or under 3kg bodyweight
• Dogs with gastrointestinal bleeding, or hypersensitivity to toceranib

Safety information

• Very common effects can include vomiting, diarrhoea, blood in the stool, reduced appetite, weight loss, lethargy, lameness and skin changes (dermatitis, itching, changes to the nose or coat) — contact your vet if you notice these
• Blood tests may show changes in red cell count, protein levels, liver enzymes or clotting cells — this is why regular monitoring is required

Cytotoxic handling advice for owners

Palladia is a cytotoxic medicine. Avoid skin contact with the tablets and with the faeces, urine or vomit of a treated dog. Never crush or break the tablets. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water after giving a dose or handling waste. Pregnant women and children should avoid contact with the tablets and with treated-dog waste. If a person accidentally swallows a tablet, seek medical advice immediately and take the packaging with you.
