Pergoquin 1mg Tablets for Horses – PPID (Cushing’s)

PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (Pom-V)

What is Pergoquin?

Pergoquin 1 mg Tablets contain pergolide, a dopamine-agonist used to manage the clinical signs of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID) in horses. Pergolide helps restore dopaminergic tone within the pituitary pars intermedia, reducing excessive secretion of ACTH-related peptides associated with PPID signs.

Presentation & tablet handling

Tablets are pink, round and scored with a cross so they can be divided into 2 or 4 equal parts for accurate dosing. When splitting, place the scored side up on a firm surface and press as directed on the carton leaflet. Split portions should be returned to the blister and used within 3 days. Tablets should not be crushed. For easier administration, the daily dose can be placed in a small amount of water and/or mixed with a sweetener and given immediately using a syringe.

Dose, titration & monitoring

  • Starting dose: 2 µg pergolide per kg bodyweight once daily (e.g., 1 tablet for a 500 kg horse).

  • Titration: Evaluate clinical signs and endocrine tests every 4–6 weeks and adjust in 0.25–0.5 mg steps to the lowest effective dose. Some horses respond at lower doses; a minority require up to 10 µg/kg daily with appropriate monitoring.

  • If intolerance occurs: stop for 2–3 days, then restart at half the previous dose and re-titrate carefully.

  • Ongoing monitoring: once stabilised, reassess clinically and with diagnostics about every 6 months; re-evaluate the diagnosis if there’s no response.

Safety & use restrictions

Do not use in horses under 2 years or in animals with known hypersensitivity to pergolide or other ergot derivatives. Use with caution during pregnancy based on a veterinary benefit–risk assessment; not recommended during lactation due to effects on prolactin and potential lactation failure. Avoid combining with dopamine antagonists (e.g., acepromazine, domperidone, metoclopramide) which can reduce pergolide efficacy. Occasional adverse effects include transient inappetence, lethargy, mild CNS signs, diarrhoea or colic; sweating is very rare.

Food-chain & milk restrictions

Not authorised for use in horses intended for human consumption. Treated horses may never enter the human food chain and must be declared “Not intended for human consumption” in the passport. Not authorised for animals producing milk for human consumption.

Storage & pack information

No special storage conditions are required. Keep blisters in the carton, out of the reach of children. Packs are available in multiple sizes to suit practice and yard use; availability may vary.

FAQs

How quickly will my horse improve?
Clinical improvement is typically seen within 6–12 weeks of starting therapy, once the dose is titrated appropriately.

Can I dissolve the tablets?
Yes. Place the daily dose in a small amount of water and/or molasses, agitate to dissolve and administer immediately.

Will my horse need lifelong treatment?
PPID is a chronic condition; most horses require lifelong pergolide with periodic dose reviews.

Which dose is right for my horse?
Start at 2 µg/kg once daily and titrate under veterinary guidance based on clinical signs and hormone testing.
