What is Equisolon?
Equisolon 300 mg Oral Powder is a corticosteroid treatment for horses containing prednisolone. It is presented as an easy-to-use oral powder in individual sachets, making it practical for short treatment courses where accurate daily dosing is needed. Each sachet contains 300 mg prednisolone.
What is it used for?
Equisolon is used for the alleviation of inflammatory and clinical parameters associated with recurrent airway obstruction (RAO) in horses. It is intended to be used in combination with environmental control, so it works best as part of a wider management plan that reduces dust, improves ventilation and helps limit exposure to respiratory triggers.
Why choose Equisolon?
Equisolon offers a convenient sachet format that makes it easier to give prednisolone accurately without measuring loose powder. It can be especially useful where a horse needs anti-inflammatory support for respiratory flare-ups and where owners or yards want a straightforward once-daily oral option. The sachets are also practical for short courses because they are pre-measured and easy to store in a medicine cupboard until needed.
How it works
Prednisolone is a corticosteroid that helps reduce inflammation in the airways. In horses with recurrent airway obstruction, this can help improve breathing comfort and reduce the clinical effects of airway inflammation when combined with appropriate changes to the horse’s environment and forage management.
How to give Equisolon
Equisolon is for oral use. The correct dose should be mixed into a small amount of feed so the full amount is eaten. Bodyweight should be checked as accurately as possible before treatment to help ensure the right dose is given. Treatment may be repeated at 24-hour intervals for up to 10 consecutive days if prescribed by the veterinary surgeon.
Food mixed with the product should not be left standing indefinitely. If the horse does not eat it, it should be replaced within 24 hours.
Important safety information
Do not use in horses with known hypersensitivity to prednisolone, corticosteroids or any of the excipients. It should not be used in animals with viral infections during the viraemic stage, systemic fungal infections, gastrointestinal ulcers or corneal ulcers. It should also not be used during pregnancy.
Because this is a corticosteroid medicine, it should only be used under veterinary direction and for the prescribed course. Care should be taken when handling the powder, particularly by anyone known to be sensitive to corticosteroids. Pregnant women should not administer the product.
Storage and handling
Equisolon is supplied in individual sachets and opened sachets should not be stored. Once mixed with meal or pelleted feed, the product has a 24-hour shelf life. Keep sachets in the original packaging and store according to the label instructions.
Withdrawal period
The meat and offal withdrawal period is 10 days. It is not authorised for use in mares producing milk for human consumption.
