What is Felimazole Oral Solution?
Felimazole 5 mg/ml Oral Solution is a prescription-only veterinary medicine for cats containing thiamazole. It is used to help manage feline hyperthyroidism, either to stabilise cats before surgery or as a long-term medical treatment where ongoing management is preferred.
What is it used for?
Felimazole Oral Solution is indicated for:
- stabilisation of feline hyperthyroidism before surgical thyroidectomy
- long-term treatment of feline hyperthyroidism
This makes it a useful option for cats that are not immediate surgical candidates, as well as for long-term medical management where surgery is not planned.
Why choose the oral solution?
Some cats are difficult to tablet, and an oral liquid can make administration easier for owners and less stressful for the cat. The liquid format can also be helpful where fine dose adjustment is needed during monitoring and stabilisation. With both 30ml and 100ml bottle options available, it can suit both shorter-term stabilisation and longer treatment courses.
How it works
Thiamazole works by reducing the production of thyroid hormones. In hyperthyroid cats, this helps bring thyroid activity back under better control, supporting improvement in clinical signs such as weight loss, increased appetite, restlessness and excessive activity when treatment is monitored correctly by the vet.
Dosing and administration
The recommended starting dose is 5 mg per day, which equals 1 ml of the product daily. Where possible, the total daily dose should be divided into two equal doses, one given in the morning and one in the evening, although once-daily dosing may be used where compliance is a concern.
Cats should be monitored carefully and the dose adjusted according to clinical response and blood test results. Accurate administration is important, and the product should be given exactly as prescribed by the veterinary surgeon.
Important safety information
Felimazole should not be used in cats with certain systemic disorders such as primary liver disease, diabetes mellitus, autoimmune disease, white blood cell abnormalities such as neutropenia or lymphopenia, or platelet disorders/coagulopathies. It should also not be used in animals with known hypersensitivity to thiamazole or the excipients.
Because thiamazole can affect blood cells and liver function, regular veterinary monitoring is important during treatment. Owners should follow all instructions on handling and dosing carefully.
Why regular monitoring matters
Hyperthyroid cats on thiamazole treatment usually need repeat blood testing so that thyroid levels, kidney values and general health can be checked. This helps the vet make sure the cat is responding well and allows the dose to be adjusted where necessary.
