What Senvelgo is used for

Senvelgo (velagliflozin) is an SGLT2 inhibitor licensed for the reduction of hyperglycaemia in cats with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. It is not a treatment for cats whose diabetes requires insulin, and current SPC guidance states combined treatment with insulin is not recommended, because of an increased risk of hypoglycaemia and because this combination has not been studied.

Strength and pack sizes

15mg/ml oral solution, given with the syringe provided. Available in 12ml and 30ml bottles.

How it’s given

Given orally, once daily, at the dose your vet prescribes based on bodyweight. Do not change the dose without veterinary advice.

Safety information — please read carefully
  • Not for cats with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), diabetic ketonuria, or severe dehydration needing IV fluids — your vet checks for ketones before starting
  • Cats previously treated with insulin have a significantly higher risk of DKA if switched to Senvelgo — this must only be done under close veterinary supervision with regular ketone monitoring
  • DKA can occur without high blood glucose (“euglycaemic DKA”) — most cases occur within the first few days of treatment
  • Contact your vet urgently if your cat becomes lethargic, stops eating, vomits, loses weight, or has sweet or acetone-smelling breath
  • Not recommended in pregnant or lactating cats
  • Common effects include diarrhoea or loose stool, increased thirst and urination, and weight loss

Manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim.
