Zelys Chewable Tablets for Dogs
Zelys chewable tablets for dogs are made by Ceva and contain pimobendan. They are a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V), so it can only be supplied against a valid prescription from your veterinary surgeon.
This page lists Zelys in 1.25 mg, 5 mg and 10 mg strengths, each as a pack of 96 tablets. Your vet decides which strength your dog needs.
What is Zelys?
Zelys is a round, beige to light brown, flavoured chewable tablet with a single score line, so it can be divided into two equal parts. Each tablet contains pimobendan (1.25 mg, 5 mg or 10 mg depending on the strength). Zelys is licensed in dogs only.
What is Zelys used for?
The authorised use of Zelys is the treatment of canine congestive heart failure originating from valvular insufficiency (mitral and/or tricuspid valve regurgitation) or dilated cardiomyopathy. It should only be started and monitored by your veterinary surgeon, who will have diagnosed your dog’s condition.

How Zelys is given
Zelys is given by mouth, at the dose and frequency set by the prescribing veterinary surgeon. Tablets can be divided into two equal parts. Return any unused part-tablet to the open blister space and keep it in the outer packaging for the next dose.
Your vet will recommend regular monitoring of heart function while your dog is on treatment.
Safety information
Do not use Zelys if your dog:
- has hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, or a heart condition where heart output cannot be improved for functional or anatomical reasons, for example aortic stenosis
- has severe liver impairment, because pimobendan is broken down mainly in the liver
- is allergic to pimobendan or any of the other ingredients
Take care and tell your vet:
- Blood glucose should be checked regularly in dogs with diabetes mellitus.
- The safety of pimobendan in pregnancy and lactation has not been established. It should only be used after a benefit and risk assessment by your vet.
- Some heart medicines, including verapamil, diltiazem and propranolol, can reduce the effect of pimobendan, so tell your vet about all other treatments.
- Rare side effects reported include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, lethargy, a raised heart rate and worsening mitral valve leakage. Very rare effects include small pin-point bleeds on the gums and bleeding.
Safety for people
Accidental swallowing, especially by a child, may cause a fast heart rate, low blood pressure on standing, flushing of the face and headaches. Keep tablets out of the sight and reach of children. Wash your hands after use. If someone swallows a tablet, seek medical advice immediately and show the leaflet or label.
Storage
Blister packs: do not store above 30°C. The tablets are flavoured, so store them out of reach of animals.
