Zycortal Suspension for Dogs 25mg/ml

PRESCRIPTION NEEDED (POM-V)

Zycortal (desoxycortone pivalate) is a prolonged-release injection used as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease). Given only by subcutaneous injection, by your vet or under close veterinary direction — this is not an oral home medicine. Most dogs also need a separate glucocorticoid prescribed alongside it.

What Zycortal is used for

Zycortal is licensed as replacement therapy for mineralocorticoid deficiency in dogs with primary hypoadrenocorticism (Addison’s disease). It replaces mineralocorticoid hormones only — most dogs also need a separate glucocorticoid (such as prednisolone) prescribed alongside it.

Strength and pack

25mg/ml desoxycortone pivalate, supplied as one 4ml vial.

How it’s given

Given by subcutaneous injection only. The starting dose is 2.2mg/kg, then individually adjusted using follow-up blood sodium/potassium checks at day 10 and day 25. The interval between doses varies by dog — commonly every 20–46 days, sometimes longer — and is set by your vet, not on a fixed schedule.

Safety information
  • Not for use in dogs hypersensitive to desoxycortone pivalate
  • A dog in an Addisonian crisis (severe dehydration/collapse) needs IV fluid stabilisation before starting Zycortal
  • Extra caution is needed in dogs with heart disease, severe kidney or liver disease, or fluid retention
  • Common effects include increased thirst and urination, tiredness, reduced appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea or shaking — contact your vet if you notice anything unusual
  • Avoid skin or eye contact when handling; this product should not be given by anyone who is pregnant or breastfeeding; seek medical advice immediately if accidentally self-injected
