Can I Use the Same Prescription More Than Once?
It depends on what your vet has written on it
Quick Answer
- Most prescriptions are valid for up to 6 months from when they're signed
- This can be shorter if your vet states a different period
- We can't dispense after the expiry date or any "no further dispenses after" date
- Repeat prescriptions may sometimes need your pet to be reassessed
How Prescription Validity Works
Most veterinary prescriptions are valid for up to 6 months from the date they're signed, unless your vet has clearly stated a shorter or different valid period.
Within that window, your vet may allow the prescription to be used for more than one order, depending on what they've written.
What Can Limit Reuse
- The prescription has reached its expiry date
- Your vet has written "no further dispenses after" a specific date
- Your vet requires your pet to be reassessed before issuing further supplies
- We're unable to alter, extend or override any of these dates
If You're Not Sure It's Still Valid
- Check the date your vet signed the prescription, and any specific instructions written on it
- If you are unsure whether your prescription can still be used, please contact Pet Med Direct and we can check this for you
- If it's expired, you'll need a new prescription from your vet before we can dispense again
How Pet Med Direct Can Help
When you place a repeat order, let us know if you're using a prescription we already have on file, including your order number, so we can check whether it's still valid for this order.
Some treatments require a valid veterinary prescription. Pet Med Direct can only supply prescription medicines after the prescription has been checked. Always follow your vet's advice and the directions on the medicine label.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know exactly how long my prescription is valid for?
Check the date it was signed and any notes from your vet about validity. If you're unsure, please contact Pet Med Direct and we can check this for you.
Can I ask Pet Med Direct to extend a prescription?
No, we're unable to alter, extend or override the dates set by your vet. A new prescription would need to come from them.
Do I need to upload my prescription again for a repeat order?
If we already have a valid copy on file, let us know your order number so we can check whether it can be used again. If you're unsure, please contact us and we will help.
Why might my vet want to reassess my pet before issuing more?
This is a decision made by your vet as part of responsible repeat prescribing, and may depend on your pet's ongoing health needs.
