What Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats is for
Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats is used to treat specific bacterial infections of the eye and eyelids. These infections can cause:
-
Redness and irritation
-
Watery or thick discharge
-
Squinting or holding the eye closed
-
Rubbing or pawing at the face
The ointment delivers an antibiotic directly to the eye surface. It helps clear the infection and supports healing of the delicate eye tissues. Your vet will examine the eye first to confirm that this is the right treatment.
Pack options – single tube or box of 12
For flexible prescribing, Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats is available as:
-
A single tube – ideal for one pet on a short or standard course
-
A box of 12 tubes – useful for longer courses, repeat treatments or multi-pet households under veterinary guidance
Your vet will advise whether one tube is enough or whether you should choose a full box of 12. Always order the quantity that matches your prescription.
How Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats works
Orbenin ophthalmic ointment contains an antibiotic from the penicillin group. It works by damaging the cell walls of susceptible bacteria. This weakens the bacteria and helps the body clear the infection.
As the infection improves, you should see:
-
Less discharge around the eyes
-
Reduced redness and swelling
-
Less rubbing or pawing at the eyes
-
Your pet opening the eye more comfortably
Because not all eye conditions are caused by bacteria, it is important that this ointment is only used when your vet has confirmed that it is appropriate.
When vets may prescribe Orbenin ophthalmic ointment
Your vet may prescribe Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats when they find:
-
A suspected or confirmed bacterial eye infection
-
Conjunctivitis with signs consistent with bacterial involvement
-
Some infections affecting the eyelids or corneal surface
They will also check for other causes such as dry eye, foreign bodies, allergies or trauma. In many cases they will use a fluorescein dye test to rule out deep ulcers and to decide on the safest treatment plan.
How to apply Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats
Your vet or veterinary nurse will demonstrate the technique in the consult room. As a guide:
-
Wash your hands before and after using the ointment
-
Gently wipe away any discharge with cooled boiled water and cotton wool, if your vet agrees
-
Hold your pet’s head steady and gently pull down the lower eyelid to make a small pocket
-
Squeeze a thin ribbon of Orbenin ophthalmic ointment into this pocket, as your vet has shown
-
Release the eyelid and let your pet blink to spread the ointment across the eye
Your vet will tell you:
-
How many times a day to apply the ointment
-
Whether to treat one eye or both
-
How many days or weeks the course should last
Try to space doses evenly through the day. Do not stop treatment early, even if the eye looks better, unless your vet tells you to.
If you are using other eye products at the same time, ask your vet which order to apply them in and how long to leave between each product.
Extra eye-care while using Orbenin
Alongside Orbenin ophthalmic ointment for dogs and cats, your vet may suggest:
-
Using a buster collar or medical pet shirt to stop rubbing or scratching
-
Keeping the eye area clean and gently wiping away dried discharge
-
Avoiding dusty, smoky or windy environments while the eye heals
-
Monitoring the untreated eye, as some infections affect both eyes
Contact your vet promptly if you notice:
-
The eye becoming more painful, cloudy or very red
-
Your pet holding the eye tightly shut or crying out
-
Green, thick or blood-stained discharge
-
Your pet becoming dull, off their food or generally unwell
These signs may mean the infection is not improving or that another condition is present.
