What Vetoryl Hard Capsules are used for
Vetoryl (trilostane) controls — it does not cure — pituitary-dependent and adrenal-dependent hyperadrenocorticism (Cushing’s disease) in dogs, by reducing excess cortisol production.
Available strengths
5mg, 10mg, 30mg, 60mg and 120mg hard capsules, packs of 30. Do not open or divide the capsules. Your vet’s prescription and periodic blood testing set and adjust the dose for your dog.
How it’s given
Given once daily with food. Never change the dose without your vet’s advice — dose adjustments are based on ACTH stimulation tests and bloodwork carried out at diagnosis and at regular recheck intervals.
Safety information
- Not for use in dogs with primary hepatic disease, renal insufficiency, hypersensitivity to trilostane, or dogs under 3kg bodyweight
- Do not use in pregnant or lactating bitches, or in dogs intended for breeding
- Dogs with Cushing’s disease have an increased risk of pancreatitis, which treatment does not remove — contact your vet promptly if your dog is lethargic, vomiting, has diarrhoea, collapses or stops eating
- Combining Vetoryl with ACE inhibitors or potassium-sparing diuretics carries a risk of dangerously high potassium levels, including reported sudden death — tell your vet about all other medicines your dog is taking
- If switching between Vetoryl hard capsules and chewable tablets, extra monitoring may be needed as the two forms are not automatically interchangeable dose-for-dose
- Common effects include reduced appetite, vomiting and diarrhoea; more serious signs (weakness, collapse) can indicate an Addisonian crisis and need urgent veterinary attention
Handling advice for owners
Do not open or divide the capsules. For use only in the animal it was prescribed for. Keep out of reach of children and other animals. Pregnant women should avoid handling and wash hands after use. Seek medical advice if a capsule is accidentally swallowed by a person.
Full prescribing information is in the product datasheet. Manufactured by Dechra.
