What this medicine is

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid. There is no UK-authorised veterinary (VMD) medicine containing ursodeoxycholic acid for dogs or cats — this product is a human-licensed medicine that your vet has prescribed for your pet under the veterinary prescribing cascade, when no authorised veterinary alternative is suitable for the case.

What it’s used for

Vets commonly prescribe ursodeoxycholic acid in dogs and cats to support bile flow and liver function in conditions such as chronic hepatitis, cholestasis and some congenital biliary conditions, as part of an ongoing treatment plan set by your vet.

How it’s given

Give the dose your vet has prescribed, exactly as directed, usually with food and as part of long-term management. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without veterinary advice.

Safety information

• Not for use in acute cholecystitis or cholangitis, biliary obstruction, or hypersensitivity to bile acids
• Requires periodic liver-function monitoring during treatment
• Tell your vet about all other medicines your pet is taking — antacids, cholestyramine and some antibiotics can interact
• Possible effects include soft stools or diarrhoea; contact your vet if you notice anything unusual
• Keep out of reach of children. Seek medical advice if a person accidentally swallows any
