Isemid Chewable Tablets for Dogs
Isemid chewable tablets for dogs are made by Ceva and contain torasemide, a loop diuretic. They are a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V), so it can only be supplied against a valid prescription from your veterinary surgeon.
This page lists Isemid in 1 mg, 2 mg and 4 mg strengths, each as a pack of 90 tablets. Your vet decides which strength your dog needs.
What is Isemid?
Isemid is a brown, oblong, flavoured chewable tablet with a score line, so it can be divided into halves. Each tablet contains torasemide (1 mg, 2 mg or 4 mg depending on the strength). Torasemide belongs to the loop diuretic group of medicines. Isemid is licensed in dogs only.
What is Isemid used for?
The authorised use of Isemid is the treatment of clinical signs related to congestive heart failure in dogs, including pulmonary oedema. It should only be started and monitored by your veterinary surgeon, who will have diagnosed your dog’s condition.
Strengths and pack sizes
Options on this page:
- Isemid 1 mg chewable tablets for dogs, pack of 90 tablets
- Isemid 2 mg chewable tablets for dogs, pack of 90 tablets
- Isemid 4 mg chewable tablets for dogs, pack of 90 tablets
Isemid is also authorised in a pack of 30 tablets. That size is not listed here. Always choose the exact strength shown on your prescription.
How Isemid is given
Isemid is given by mouth, at the dose and frequency set by the prescribing veterinary surgeon. If your dog does not take the tablet readily, it can be given with food or placed directly into the mouth. Tablets can be split into halves. Keep any remaining tablet half in the blister and use it at the next dose.
Torasemide increases thirst, so your dog should always have free access to fresh water. Your vet will arrange check-ups to monitor kidney function, hydration and blood salts during treatment.
Safety information
Do not use Isemid if your dog:
- has kidney failure
- is dehydrated, has low blood volume or has low blood pressure
- is already receiving another loop diuretic
- is allergic to torasemide or any of the other ingredients
Take care and tell your vet:
- Isemid is not recommended for pregnant or lactating dogs or for breeding animals.
- Use with caution in dogs with diabetes mellitus.
- Tell your vet before using other medicines, including anti-inflammatories, certain antibiotics, steroids, ACE inhibitors, digoxin or medicines for diabetes.
- Contact your vet if your dog has loss of appetite, vomiting or lethargy.
- Reported side effects include vomiting, diarrhoea, increased urination, urinary incontinence, reduced appetite, dehydration, weight loss, lethargy and increased thirst.
Safety for people
Accidental swallowing may cause increased urination, thirst, stomach upset, low blood pressure and dehydration. Return part-used tablets to the blister and the carton, out of the reach of children. People allergic to torasemide or to sulfonamides should avoid contact with the product. Wash your hands after use. If someone swallows a tablet, seek medical advice and show the leaflet or label.
Storage
No special storage conditions are needed. Keep tablets where animals cannot reach them, because they are flavoured.
