Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml is a solution for injection made by Ceva. It contains meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), and is licensed for dogs and cats. It is a prescription-only veterinary medicine (POM-V).

What is Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml injection?

Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml is a clear, yellow solution for injection. Each ml contains 5 mg of meloxicam. It also contains ethanol.

What is Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml injection used for?

The authorised uses, by species, are:

Dogs

• Alleviation of inflammation and pain in both acute and chronic musculo-skeletal disorders.
• Reduction of post-operative pain and inflammation following orthopaedic and soft tissue surgery.

Cats

• Reduction of post-operative pain after ovariohysterectomy and minor soft tissue surgery.

How Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml is given

Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml is given by injection. In dogs it is given as a single injection under the skin, or into a vein or under the skin before surgery. In cats it is given as a single injection under the skin before surgery. The prescribing veterinary surgeon decides the dose and route. Particular care should be taken with the accuracy of dosing, and contamination should be avoided during use.

Safety information

Do not use Meloxidyl 5 mg/ml in:

• pregnant or lactating animals
• animals with gastrointestinal disorders such as irritation and haemorrhage, impaired liver, heart or kidney function, or bleeding (haemorrhagic) disorders
• animals with a known allergy to meloxicam or any other ingredient
• animals less than 6 weeks of age, or cats of less than 2 kg

Take care and tell your vet:

• It must not be given with other NSAIDs or glucocorticosteroids.
• Avoid use in any dehydrated, low blood volume or low blood pressure animal, because of a risk of increased kidney toxicity.
• In cats, oral follow-up treatment with meloxicam or other NSAIDs should not be given, as suitable dose regimens have not been established.
• For post-operative pain relief in cats, safety has only been documented after thiopental/halothane anaesthesia.
• Typical NSAID side effects such as loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea, blood in the faeces, apathy and kidney failure have occasionally been reported. If side effects occur, stop treatment and seek veterinary advice.

Safety for people

Accidental self-injection may cause pain. People with known sensitivity to NSAIDs should avoid contact with the product. After accidental self-injection, seek medical advice immediately and show the leaflet or label.

Storage and shelf life

Do not store above 25 °C. Shelf life as packaged is 3 years. Once the vial has been opened, use within 28 days.
