What this medicine is
Sildenafil is a human-licensed medicine (brand names include Viagra) — there is no UK VMD-authorised veterinary sildenafil product, so this is supplied for your dog under the veterinary prescribing cascade, on your vet’s judgement.
What it’s used for
Sildenafil is a PDE5 inhibitor. Vets use it to help manage pulmonary arterial hypertension in dogs, by relaxing blood vessels in the lungs to ease the workload on the heart.
Pack sizes
25mg and 50mg tablets, packs of 8.
How it’s given
Give the dose your vet has prescribed, exactly as directed. Do not change the dose without veterinary advice.
Safety information
- Do not combine with nitrate medicines or alpha-blockers
- Tell your vet about all other medicines your dog is taking — cimetidine, erythromycin, itraconazole and phenobarbital can interact with sildenafil
- Possible effects reported in people include vomiting, dizziness, nasal congestion or flushing; significance in dogs is less well established — contact your vet if you notice anything unusual
- Keep out of reach of children. If a person accidentally takes this medicine, seek medical advice immediately
