What this medicine is
This is a 20mg/5ml fluoxetine oral solution, supplied for dogs by your vet under the veterinary prescribing cascade. No UK-authorised veterinary oral solution of fluoxetine currently exists — the VMD-licensed fluoxetine products for dogs are tablet forms (e.g. Fluoxevet, Reconcile). Your vet has judged this liquid formulation appropriate for your dog’s specific case, most often where a tablet is impractical to give or a strength between tablet sizes is needed.
What it’s used for
Fluoxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI). In dogs, it is used as an aid in managing separation-related disorders and similar anxiety-related behaviours, always alongside a structured behaviour modification plan set by your vet or a behaviourist — not as a standalone treatment.
Pack size
70ml bottle, 20mg/5ml strength. Dose and duration are set individually by your prescribing vet based on your dog’s bodyweight and case.
How it’s given
Give the dose your vet has prescribed, once daily, with or without food. Do not change the dose or stop treatment without veterinary advice — if a dose is missed, give the next one as scheduled rather than doubling up.
Safety information
- Not for dogs under 4kg bodyweight or under 6 months old
- Not for dogs with epilepsy or a history of seizures, or dogs hypersensitive to SSRIs
- Use in pregnant, lactating or breeding dogs is not recommended
- Do not combine with other serotonergic medicines, MAOIs, phenothiazines (e.g. acepromazine) or tricyclic antidepressants without veterinary guidance — tell your vet about all other medicines your dog is taking
- Most common effects are reduced appetite and lethargy; less commonly, urinary or coordination changes; rarely, seizures or vomiting — contact your vet if you notice any of these
- Keep out of reach of children. Pregnant women should avoid skin contact. Seek medical advice if a person accidentally swallows any
