What Vetmedin Chew is used for
Pimobendan is licensed to treat canine congestive heart failure caused by dilated cardiomyopathy or valvular insufficiency (mitral and/or tricuspid regurgitation). It is also licensed for preclinical dilated cardiomyopathy in Doberman Pinschers, and for preclinical myxomatous mitral valve disease (stage B2), to delay the onset of clinical heart-failure signs — your vet will confirm which use applies to your dog after a full cardiac work-up.
Strength and pack
5mg pimobendan per tablet, scored so it can be halved for accurate dosing. This listing is for the 50-tablet pack. Vetmedin Chew is also available in 1.25mg for smaller dogs.
How it’s given
Given orally, about one hour before feeding, twice daily around 12 hours apart. Your vet sets and adjusts the exact dose for your dog’s bodyweight — never change it without veterinary advice.
Safety information
- Not for use in dogs with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, conditions where cardiac output cannot be improved (e.g. aortic stenosis), severe liver impairment, or hypersensitivity to pimobendan
- Blood glucose should be monitored in diabetic dogs
- Possible effects (rare) include vomiting, diarrhoea, reduced appetite, lethargy or increased heart rate; contact your vet if you notice anything unusual
- Keep tablets out of reach of animals and children — wash your hands after handling, and seek medical advice if a person accidentally swallows any
